<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of these events is called <a href="http://www.megweaves.co.nz/2014/12/weaver-to-weaver-2014-and-day-in-life.html" target="_blank">Weaver to Weaver</a> where we send a small envelope of weaving-related items that mean something to ourselves and/or may inspire the receiver. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I sent my envelop to Donni of <a href="https://loomandarty.wordpress.com/2015/02/09/weaverly-thinks/" target="_blank">loomandarty</a> and received one </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">from Patty </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">of </span><a href="http://untangledstring.blogspot.com.au/" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" target="_blank">untangled string</a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">from Utah in the United States. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One half of the package relates to where Patty lives. The hand spun yarn and mohair locks truly reflect the textures and colours of her environment. Patty's pamphlet of the ski resort and the warning on 'you could die out here' made me smile as I am one of those totally non-outdoor person so there is no danger if I ever go to visit Patty in Utah................ although I really do appreciate the beauty of nature.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-84cCruZ0XgY/VOBLHngFoSI/AAAAAAAABHE/QVM3wxIUlRU/s1600/IMG_2640.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-84cCruZ0XgY/VOBLHngFoSI/AAAAAAAABHE/QVM3wxIUlRU/s1600/IMG_2640.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The second half are items from her extended stay in Thailand a while ago. It is very interesting as I have just been reading the blog post on Kaz's tour to northern <a href="http://curiousweaver.id.au/archives/5115" target="_blank">Thailand and Laos</a>. Despite the differences in culture, and landscapes of the 2 places so far apart, I can see some similarity in the colours! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SKeAftgg614/VOBLIZfL7PI/AAAAAAAABHM/e9qXWRUo62o/s1600/IMG_2641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SKeAftgg614/VOBLIZfL7PI/AAAAAAAABHM/e9qXWRUo62o/s1600/IMG_2641.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am learning to use more colours in my work so these images and yarns are good push in the right direction. In saying that, the last 3 items that came off my looms were still black, white and grey. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Thank you Meg and Patty for your inspirations, and happy weaving!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Every New Year's day, <a href="http://www.megweaves.co.nz/2015/01/a-day-in-life-of-looms-2015.html" target="_blank">Meg</a> has been posting photos of what is on her looms. She also has links to other people who are sharing their 'day in the life of looms 2015' at the end of her post. Join us if you are interested. She has also put up <a href="http://www.megweaves.co.nz/2014/12/weaver-to-weaver-2014-and-day-in-life.html" target="_blank">guidelines to the next Weaver to Weaver.</a></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I been neglecting my blog last year as I got a bit hooked on <a href="http://instagram.com/sampling_ah" target="_blank">Instagram</a>. However, there are limitations as to how much I can share on that platform and I am hoping to spend more time back here in 2015.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For the last couple of weeks I have been giving my big loom some very thorough maintenance:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2500 heddles: washed and re-installed</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">160 lamm to treadles cords: washed and re-installed</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">80 new connecting cords from treadles connecting to lamm cords: installed. (I don't know if this is the best way but it will have to do for the moment)</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I only have 3 more treadles to tie up.......</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hopefully, before the day ends, it will have a new warp on it.</span></div>

Once every few years, I have the opportunity to spend Christmas and New Year at home and get to <a href="http://sampling-sampling.blogspot.com.au/2011/01/weaving-in-new-yearii.html" target="_blank">weave in the new year</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So here are my looms:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">KaTe has a 2/20 silk warp with weft Kasuri being woven. I have finished the first piece and am contemplating the second design. The wefts are being wound, then binding and dyeing to follow.</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">KaTe: Thorp 8 shaft countermarche</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Chibi has a 150-thread black cotton pre-wound warp ready for Amy to come over on Friday to do some weaving. She had woven <a href="http://soozs.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/camped-and-bestowed.html" target="_blank">her own fabric</a> before for her mum to make into an Arrietty bag.</span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Chibi: Saori SX60 2 shaft folding loom</span></td></tr>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Primo also has a 150-thread black cotton pre-wound warp ready for <a href="http://instagram.com/aussieellen" target="_blank">Ellen</a> to have a go at weaving. I have set the loom on its stand so that it works with the peddles, like a floor loom.</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I will have to catch up on some blog posts but I have also been spending time </span><a href="http://instagram.com/sampling_ah" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" target="_blank">here</a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In the meantime, happy new year and happy weaving.</span>samplinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10569023578350980786noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5187647762967620316.post-64870919763845391772013-08-04T17:31:00.002+10:002013-08-04T17:31:30.906+10:00A good start........<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Such a lot can change in a week. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A bit of sunshine midweek, a bit/lots of chocolate (<a href="http://www.nigella.com/recipes/view/chocolate-cherry-cupcakes-144" target="_blank">cupcakes</a>, <a href="http://www.valrhona-chocolate.com/chocolate-pearls" target="_blank">pearls</a>, <a href="http://www.finecooking.com/recipes/crunchy-cocoa-wafers.aspx" target="_blank">wafers</a>), a bit of encouragement from friends, a bit of perseverance, and ignoring dishes, laundry and housework in general, I got the warp onto the loom.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sARjqNS4WJM/Uf3-n3lBezI/AAAAAAAABCg/LPRJekpLZqk/s1600/warp+v.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sARjqNS4WJM/Uf3-n3lBezI/AAAAAAAABCg/LPRJekpLZqk/s320/warp+v.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i22S1rdp3OY/Uf3-n_oJQiI/AAAAAAAABCk/KCkyrGCv4ZU/s1600/warp+vi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i22S1rdp3OY/Uf3-n_oJQiI/AAAAAAAABCk/KCkyrGCv4ZU/s320/warp+vi.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zeYPWIOem_4/Uf3-oZbCQPI/AAAAAAAABCw/GggoFNB3OVQ/s1600/warp+iv.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zeYPWIOem_4/Uf3-oZbCQPI/AAAAAAAABCw/GggoFNB3OVQ/s320/warp+iv.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Pwm1ga-YhmM/Uf3-o4jM9AI/AAAAAAAABC0/wTAV0O0mjkk/s1600/warp+vii.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Pwm1ga-YhmM/Uf3-o4jM9AI/AAAAAAAABC0/wTAV0O0mjkk/s320/warp+vii.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There is something calming and beautiful about a warp on the loom, even when it not quite ready. This morning, I was quite determined to get some weaving started, but I did not have a long enough rod for the front beam. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is the widest I have woven on the table loom, almost the full width.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> None of the hardware stores nearby were open on a Sunday. Luckily, a good friend has some spare timber dowels and he helped me cut one to length with a barter of some chocolate/plum jam cupcakes from the freezer. It was a good trade. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fyLTsRu4mpI/Uf3-D8wX86I/AAAAAAAABCY/2IyZ7SoqrAo/s1600/cloth+i.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fyLTsRu4mpI/Uf3-D8wX86I/AAAAAAAABCY/2IyZ7SoqrAo/s320/cloth+i.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l1XQQ6uDuX8/Uf3-DNw0lhI/AAAAAAAABCQ/vfMt3w_Kod4/s1600/cloth+ii.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l1XQQ6uDuX8/Uf3-DNw0lhI/AAAAAAAABCQ/vfMt3w_Kod4/s320/cloth+ii.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I got started. The spacing of the weft pattern and the balance of the cloth is working well in the first 5cm of the piece, at least to how I had envisage the piece. It is a good sign.</span><br /><br />samplinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10569023578350980786noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5187647762967620316.post-8188565415375151082013-07-29T01:08:00.001+10:002013-07-29T01:08:35.138+10:00Out of the dark<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If the 'dementors' were to visit me on friday, they could have sucked the soul out of me easily. It had been one of those weeks, months.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I threw out 2 desserts and barely rescued the third. I cast on 2 items but frogged them as I could not get them to work. Things that usually make me feel better don't seem to have the same effect.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cBt0EePNuf4/UfUpCxxWHOI/AAAAAAAABBo/ztjpviLZ1OI/s1600/dark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="235" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cBt0EePNuf4/UfUpCxxWHOI/AAAAAAAABBo/ztjpviLZ1OI/s320/dark.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I know that it is up to me to change that feeling from dark to light. I know that it is a matter of time. It is winter. I feel cold and pain. I feel tired and can't concentrate. We are past the shortest day. There are 4 weeks till craft camp.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I need to make something, to weave something. I have been thinking about this piece for a while. I had to ask myself though whether I was just asking for trouble.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I wound a warp with this <a href="http://www.avril-kyoto.com/shop/yarn_details.php?prdct_code=N-2028-R" target="_blank">yarn</a>: 24 epi, 21 inches wide, 504 ends, 3.4m long. I don't know if I have calculated the sett correctly. It will be a light fabric, I think.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S2XVCMk90VQ/UfUpCi_AUsI/AAAAAAAABBc/VAt1dA4KwWM/s1600/warp+i.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S2XVCMk90VQ/UfUpCi_AUsI/AAAAAAAABBc/VAt1dA4KwWM/s320/warp+i.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It looks beautiful. Like bundles of noodles.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rMiAdeljrqM/UfUpDrLR0gI/AAAAAAAABBw/fVLQvK7YJCk/s1600/warp+ii.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rMiAdeljrqM/UfUpDrLR0gI/AAAAAAAABBw/fVLQvK7YJCk/s320/warp+ii.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And then I started to prepare to thread the heddles. I don't have enough heddles on some of the harnesses. I forgot to count them before I started...... I am out of practice.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nuaVzgZ6zTA/UfUpDueKGtI/AAAAAAAABB0/tEt-ijwI7pM/s1600/warp+iii.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nuaVzgZ6zTA/UfUpDueKGtI/AAAAAAAABB0/tEt-ijwI7pM/s320/warp+iii.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It took me a couple of hours to fix this. I could have threaded the warp differently but I wanted the option to do plain weave or twill. There is enough length in the warp to do some experimentation. In fact, I think that this whole piece will be an experiment. I am halfway through threading. I think that I may be ready to start weaving next weekend......</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And the weft yarn - a special hand-dyed yarn ( </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">フリスビー手絣)</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> bought from Avril. I think that this colour way has been discontinued.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v4zoms-HYW4/UfUpCfBWTjI/AAAAAAAABBY/49GSQP6K0Mc/s1600/light.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v4zoms-HYW4/UfUpCfBWTjI/AAAAAAAABBY/49GSQP6K0Mc/s320/light.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Amy is 10 years old and this is only her third time weaving at a loom. Amy wove on a Saori loom, 2 shaft with a pre-threaded black cotton warp. She brought all the weft yarn with her from home. She wove this last Saturday and it took her about 3 hours.</span></div>

At first I thought an aboriginal flag, then I thought about doing bubbles. Finally I decided an ocean landscape. I weaved different blues and greens together so it began to look like the ocean. Next was the hard part I made a sort of hilly thing and made clouds and sky above.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I repeated the 2 pieces that were acquired by Wangaratta Art Gallery, and added another 2 pieces into the series. This series of work was inspired by a lecture at the International Shibori Symposium in 2011.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I swear that this year is passing at lightning speed. I can not keep up and too many things have been left un-blogged:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Another loom, <a href="http://sammiam.wordpress.com/2013/05/13/ready-to-weave/" target="_blank">Mirabelle</a>, was given new life on Mother's day. Samm is off and running with her new weaving and some amazing paper self-spun yarn as weft. I look forward to when she shows me how to do that!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Winter is here with rain, lightning, thunder and a leaking roof. Enough said, will deal with that tomorrow when I ring up the roof plumber and then wait........</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.sewjourn.net.au/" target="_blank">Craft camp</a> (a week ago already), organised by <a href="http://soozs.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Suzie</a>, was a productive and much needed couple of days away. I had been feeling any trace of creativity has 'faded' away and that I really need to make something, anything as I have not really woven, knitted or sewn very much this year. Suzie pointed out this fabric (called Fade Away) to me a couple months ago at <a href="http://www.tessuti-shop.com/" target="_blank">Tessuti</a>. She said that I had to go and see it. In fact, I had seen it and decided that if I did not have a project for it, I was not going to get it. (You see I am trying to cut down on buying fabric and yarn this year, not very successfully I might add.) Upon second look, I figured it was the perfect thing for the <a href="http://www.tessuti-shop.com/products/pdf-new-york-cape-for-print-copy-shop" target="_blank">New York cape</a>. I have seen a sample of it in the shop and had seen a few of them made in blogland.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://woollenflower.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Jules</a> and I did a sew-a-long and made hers out of Harris Tweed, complete with label that has the weaver's name on it! I can't wait to see her finished cape.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The fabric is amazing: a double weave with gradation of woollen weft from black to white with a mix of silk in the middle. I had a good look at the structure and will try to have a go at weaving something like it one day. I still have some scraps so will do a study of it then.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KNHpEXQvNxI/UasBG-LSwQI/AAAAAAAAA-k/vUycaZyVwyI/s1600/NY+cape.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KNHpEXQvNxI/UasBG-LSwQI/AAAAAAAAA-k/vUycaZyVwyI/s320/NY+cape.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WTuv00MbQqk/UasBMSWv7nI/AAAAAAAAA-0/viXOAS86L_8/s1600/NY+cape+iii.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WTuv00MbQqk/UasBMSWv7nI/AAAAAAAAA-0/viXOAS86L_8/s320/NY+cape+iii.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I think that this is the best use of the fabric that I can come up with to show off its beauty. As the fabric was reversible, I just managed to to cut out the pieces of the cape , less the front facing. Suzie, the most generous soul gave me enough from her piece to make the facing. I am forever grateful and relieved that I did not have to look for alternative fabric. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3rQnc6W7uO8/UasBLlb2ScI/AAAAAAAAA-s/OXwY0UKgaUM/s1600/NY+cape+i.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3rQnc6W7uO8/UasBLlb2ScI/AAAAAAAAA-s/OXwY0UKgaUM/s320/NY+cape+i.jpg" width="210" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The original pattern calls for an exposed <a href="http://www.tessuti-shop.com/products/black-wool-binding" target="_blank">wool binding</a>. I didn't want that dark outline around the paler section at the bottom so I made some binding out of some silk chiffon I had in stash. I turned the hem under with the binding and then hand stitched it down so that there was no exposed stitching on the outside.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YoT01YpJy8w/UasBMj4-bwI/AAAAAAAAA-8/u5iNQ-pAwq8/s1600/NY+cape+ii.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YoT01YpJy8w/UasBMj4-bwI/AAAAAAAAA-8/u5iNQ-pAwq8/s320/NY+cape+ii.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">All the seams were bound with the silk binding (pattern calls for ready made purchased <a href="http://www.tessuti-shop.com/products/black-poly-cotton-15mm-bias-binding" target="_blank">bias binding</a>) as well but they are machine stitched. I was a bit confused as whether they were totally bound with bias tape or what is called </span><a href="http://www.sewing.org/files/guidelines/11_340_bound_hong_kong_seam_finishes.pdf" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;" target="_blank">Hong Kong finish</a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">. I think that the latter results in less bulk.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KAYxW67bsNU/UasBMsiX70I/AAAAAAAAA-4/RTVIlcEXrPs/s1600/NY+cape+iv.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KAYxW67bsNU/UasBMsiX70I/AAAAAAAAA-4/RTVIlcEXrPs/s320/NY+cape+iv.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I also used sewn on 18mm press studs instead of buttons.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I felt like I had done this in a much more complicated method than what the pattern had intended. However, I think that the fabric itself dictated some of that. One good thing with having Tessuti in Melbourne was that I could try on their sample at the store before starting the project. There are probably a couple of technical things I would do differently but I like it that I learn something new with every project. A big thank you to Suzie and Lisa for all your help.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So bring on Winter, I am ready with cape.</span>samplinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10569023578350980786noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5187647762967620316.post-14800235081651668282013-04-03T22:09:00.003+11:002013-04-04T17:47:34.089+11:00Rebirth - Hilda<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I said sure, come over and we can figure it out.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We had an initial inspection and decided on the parts that needed replacing. Teegs went to work, ordering new parts and refurbishing the loom.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Both of us are so excited that we needed to tell the world about the re-birth of Hilda and that Teegs is weaving! So this is a shared blog post:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hilda is a portable 2 shaft/harness table loom, with a weaving width of just under 40cm. The 2 shafts/harnesses work by moving the handle on the top roller back and forth to create the shed. It was interesting to see that all the heddles were connected together, top and bottom. They were made of string with a metal eyelet in the middle. Unfortunately, they were very rusted and on the way to disintegration. The reed was 15 dent and also very rusted.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The loom was made in Melbourne by Dyer and Phillips Pty Ltd. The address was in Flinders Lane, previously the <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;">centre of Melbourne's </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Textile_industry" style="background-color: white; background-image: none; line-height: 19.1875px; text-decoration: none;" title="Textile industry"><span style="color: black;">rag trade</span></a></span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 19.1875px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> for the middle decades of the 20th century.</span></span></div>

<span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Teegs made a 7.2m long warp, 10 inches wide at 10epi, of Bendigo Classic 2 ply wool in black. We put the warp on front to back - sleyed the reed first, clamped to the table and then threaded the heddles. (Yes, I do work with a mix of metric and imperial measurements!)</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It has been hard to focus this year but craft camp at the end of February restored some faith and inspiration. It has taken nearly another month for me to get my act together and finally got a warp on the loom. It makes me feel restless when my looms are empty, without warps. It makes me feel like I am neglecting them. Do they have feelings? I don't know for sure. I think they feed off my state of mind, as to how they behave when I am weaving.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">White cotton, plain weave. A bit of experimentation. Hopefully it will turn out to match what I have in mind, </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">or not.........</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">quoted from Olga Buraya-Kefelian.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 1em !important; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I met <a href="http://olgajazzzy.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Olga</a> on Skype through <a href="http://soozs.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Sooz</a> one day and she showed us her design of the Yabane scarf. I loved it and offered to test knit it for her. My most sincere apology as it is embarrassing to say that it had taken months for me to finish this project, despite the fact that it is a really simple pattern to knit. I have to admit that I am really SLOW knitter and always get stuck at the weaving in ends stage........However, the knitting part is completed, ends woven in and the piece blocked. Now I just have to wait till the weather turns cold to wear it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: center;">I love the three-dimensional aspect of the structure and the simplicity of the design.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am lucky to get 2 New Year days. It is like having a grace period to get everything done. There had been a lot happening between the last blog post and this one. I call it the new year 'frantic panic' and it is about getting things done.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It <strike>will be</strike> is nice to start the new year with most things in order: a clean house, clean kitchen, clean laundry, as many finished projects as possible, completed tax return, stocked up fridge and pantry. In with the new and out with the old. It makes me feel like I am ready to face what is to come. I like these rituals and traditions. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is about family & friends, a very yummy dinner on new year's eve.......and new clothes, ready for tomorrow.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So again, happy new year, and good health!</span>samplinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10569023578350980786noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5187647762967620316.post-65621362380185673332012-12-31T23:30:00.000+11:002013-01-01T03:14:16.587+11:00Happy holiday season<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It gives me time to catch my breath and to create.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A few weeks ago, I had a 5-day weekend and managed to get something on my loom. I have upgraded my 2 shafts (harnesses) Saori loom to 4 shafts. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I did a lot of things that were new to me. I put the new hardware onto the loom (it now has 6 treadles). I wove with silk, in both warp and weft.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I put my warp on to the loom from front to back.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> I was very satisfying knowing that I had enough time and did not have to rush! I enjoyed the process.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I used my new toy, the Saori cross box to keep my threads in order while I sleyed the reed.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lHGZQqFxFVU/UKyqks5KMII/AAAAAAAAA4E/EQ7Oc7Guojk/s1600/L1060149.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lHGZQqFxFVU/UKyqks5KMII/AAAAAAAAA4E/EQ7Oc7Guojk/s320/L1060149.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I turned the reed setup around so that the chain of warp threads was at the front of the loom.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WeKThdlT09E/UKyqdEcAioI/AAAAAAAAA38/61RxWllvVIo/s1600/L1060156.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WeKThdlT09E/UKyqdEcAioI/AAAAAAAAA38/61RxWllvVIo/s320/L1060156.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I threaded my heddles from the back of the loom and then wind the warp around the back beam.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cjGloIhv59w/UKyqcGkLuBI/AAAAAAAAA30/1iZ9PK64p8o/s1600/L1060152.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cjGloIhv59w/UKyqcGkLuBI/AAAAAAAAA30/1iZ9PK64p8o/s320/L1060152.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have never woven with a silk warp before and had some tension problems. There is almost no stretch in silk. Wool is a lot more forgiving. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I started weaving and thought, this pattern does not look like what I had in mind. Maybe the variegated weft made it difficult to see the weave structure. There was a nagging feeling but I could not pin it down. Halfway through, I checked my tie up. I had done it correctly with the treadles but had forgotten to fix it to the same sequence at the shafts. Duh!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I liked the pattern though and decided to run with it........... </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lFNTHxvSfKs/UKyr7DMfbfI/AAAAAAAAA4M/tx5KxKfWwMI/s1600/L1060161.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lFNTHxvSfKs/UKyr7DMfbfI/AAAAAAAAA4M/tx5KxKfWwMI/s320/L1060161.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I love the look and feel of the silk. I had enough warp for 2 pieces. The second one has a single solid colour weft and a straight forward twill weave structure. It looks and feel so different.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XE_PnJiWirY/UKyvaCnC7AI/AAAAAAAAA4g/edYGvEtN6D0/s1600/birds+eye+I.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XE_PnJiWirY/UKyvaCnC7AI/AAAAAAAAA4g/edYGvEtN6D0/s320/birds+eye+I.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These are both Christmas presents so I will show images of the finished items next month.</span>samplinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10569023578350980786noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5187647762967620316.post-2688454981267503442012-09-03T23:12:00.002+10:002012-09-03T23:15:22.602+10:00Fragments<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It does not seem like more than 2 months had passed. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have been on the looms a bit this winter. Probably the most that I have woven in a long time.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> All 3 looms had warps on at one time or another.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There was the Bendigo Sheep and Wool Show - <a href="http://curiousweaver.id.au/" target="_blank">Kaz</a> and I took our looms there and had <a href="http://curiousweaver.id.au/archives/1849" target="_blank">3 days of intense fun</a> with lots of people weaving on the Saori looms. Many of them trying it for the first time.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xSOY0IgpSFc/UESlifwX8HI/AAAAAAAAA24/f0Ojl0PdJWU/s1600/bendigo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xSOY0IgpSFc/UESlifwX8HI/AAAAAAAAA24/f0Ojl0PdJWU/s320/bendigo.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There was the trip to Wangaratta and Beechworth - my mum and I went for a weekend and saw the exhibitions at the Wangaratta Art Gallery and the Old School House Gallery. It was great to see those red dots next to my pieces!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There was the Olympics and I signed up for one of the challenges on Ravelry. I wove a baby blanket for a friend. Her baby girl was born last week.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XnKRaILJIwc/UESnEe05jeI/AAAAAAAAA3A/NUkAUSjqiig/s1600/BB_9.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XnKRaILJIwc/UESnEe05jeI/AAAAAAAAA3A/NUkAUSjqiig/s1600/BB_9.jpeg" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There was a commission.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a6GTx6U_n4w/UESn-vfGIUI/AAAAAAAAA3I/pw9BPBLAnYo/s1600/H2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a6GTx6U_n4w/UESn-vfGIUI/AAAAAAAAA3I/pw9BPBLAnYo/s1600/H2.jpg" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There was a young convert who came to weave on my loom and made <a href="http://soozs.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/camped-and-bestowed.html" target="_blank">her own fabric</a>.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There was a football scarf long overdue (finals are this month and Spring is here), and I tried to make it not look like a football scarf!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WaQjctxzSvY/UESrKLt5mGI/AAAAAAAAA3g/8zQ13Lo4ThM/s1600/StKilda-i.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WaQjctxzSvY/UESrKLt5mGI/AAAAAAAAA3g/8zQ13Lo4ThM/s320/StKilda-i.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There was craft camp, but that is another story.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It seems like I packed a lot into the last couple of months. Maybe the latest project on the loom is a reflection of how I feel...... a bit fragmented.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OLvGGrW-Ylo/UESjrKLJ37I/AAAAAAAAA2w/97C-AJVQ50U/s1600/fragment.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OLvGGrW-Ylo/UESjrKLJ37I/AAAAAAAAA2w/97C-AJVQ50U/s320/fragment.jpg" width="320" /></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First, they accepted 2 out of 3 pieces submitted.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Second, they asked if it was possible to use one of the images for the promotion of the exhibition.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then, this week, I received a note to say that the gallery would like to purchase a couple of my pieces.........</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am so excited you can not wipe the smile off my face.</span>samplinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10569023578350980786noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5187647762967620316.post-54154179216304286862012-05-27T22:45:00.000+10:002012-05-27T22:47:43.659+10:00Meltdown - stress inhibits creativity<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After weeks of dealing with appliance service people, I was really pleased with myself that I only took my Saori loom with me to craft camp. A piece of equipment that does not require electricity, does not make a lot of noise and is calming and straight forward to use.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Warning, there is a bit of ranting here, so you can skip to the photo at the end if you prefer.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First, my microwave oven stopped. It happened at the same time as the light bulb in the oven blew. The latter was easy. A trip to the supermarket, new bulb, self installed. The microwave, however, took 2 trips to the repairer to get fixed properly.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Second, my fridge stopped. The repair man came, charged A$200 and ordered a new temperature sensor part. Apparently should take 2 to 5 business days. Two weeks later, there was still no parts, rang them multiple times and I got answering machine each time. I left messages but no one called me back. I complain to the distributor. Hah! Part arrived. Finally, took time off work to wait for repair man. Texted to say estimated 9am arrival, 11:45am was the actual arrival time. Wrong part ordered! Still non functioning fridge after 3 weeks. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Finally, decided to buy new fridge to avoid dealing with these people. They stressed me out! Do they think that because they are the 'authorised service agents' that I have no choice but to use them!?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well, maybe but new fridge is the other choice.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I love my new fridge. The service was much better. Delivery was made within the time frame specified and they moved my old fridge out onto the kerb for hard rubbish collection. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I also have other appliances of the same brand as the new fridge so I know that their service calls can be nominated within a 2-hour window, and they answer their phones.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Third, my telephone stopped working. Needless to say, I learnt my lesson. I bought a new phone and dropped non-functioning phone off for recycling.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In that whole month of electrical appliances meltdown, my level of creativity was zilch. Things that I have woven did not really work to expectation, sewing had to be unpicked and re-sewn.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now, all that bad energy is gone and the creative mojo is back. I had fun and calm in the last couple of days. My loom enjoyed its first trip out of the house since arriving from Japan. Much happier now.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A glimpse of my creation at craft camp:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rp_ngmNiT9o/T8IeaRmCQ-I/AAAAAAAAA2M/kOSzpNyhdyQ/s1600/IIII+after+iii.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rp_ngmNiT9o/T8IeaRmCQ-I/AAAAAAAAA2M/kOSzpNyhdyQ/s1600/IIII+after+iii.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Now, if only I can get Blogger formatting to work better, but that will be too much to ask.......</span></div>samplinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10569023578350980786noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5187647762967620316.post-60457724919579248682012-05-14T22:39:00.000+10:002012-05-14T22:39:46.986+10:00Still experimenting with more of the same.........<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have been experimenting more with the <a href="http://sampling-sampling.blogspot.com.au/2011/07/i-am-back-to-weaving-and-i-am-not.html" target="_blank">combination of silk stainless steel,</a> <a href="http://sampling-sampling.blogspot.com.au/2011/09/p2p2-big-reveal.html" target="_blank">felting wool</a> and non-felting alpaca and alpaca/silk yarns. I am getting to understand their behaviour more and so can control the outcome better. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here are 2 scarves that I have submitted to the <a href="http://www.geelongaustralia.com.au/nwm/calendar/item/8cd69fb09b9cdac.aspx" target="_blank">Scarf Festival</a> at the Wool Museum in Geelong.</span><br />

Here are some of mine:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gka7s9anob4/T3f60NlKu1I/AAAAAAAAA0Y/SxCowEk_NwM/s1600/P1000782.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gka7s9anob4/T3f60NlKu1I/AAAAAAAAA0Y/SxCowEk_NwM/s320/P1000782.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">From left to right:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Le Clerc's plastic ones, the Swedish cardboard ones, Saori clear plastic ones, timber ones in various sizes and bamboo ones. The last 2 types are </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">for my Japanese boat shuttles</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">However, being April Fool's day, the joke is on me as I don't actually have a bobbin winder that the timber and bamboo ones will fit so they have not really been used yet......</span>samplinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10569023578350980786noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5187647762967620316.post-22972073311506729672012-03-24T22:25:00.000+11:002012-03-24T22:25:36.216+11:00New........<div class="p1"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My Japanese friend says that March is the season of parting and April is encounter and starting new life season.</span></div><div class="p1"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="p1"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Since the last post, I have had a lot of new encounters..........</span></div><div class="p1"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">New life: </span></div><div class="p1"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have had this miniature water lily for about 2 years now and this is the first time it has bloomed! In the last few days of summer, I watched it come to life over a couple of days and disappeared just as fast.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Eixcj5jSnSw/T22lGT0fgSI/AAAAAAAAAz0/vgeGkVBVono/s1600/lily+bud.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Eixcj5jSnSw/T22lGT0fgSI/AAAAAAAAAz0/vgeGkVBVono/s1600/lily+bud.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zzEnAeSKy3w/T22lErOIk9I/AAAAAAAAAzw/1YLYWp9L93Y/s1600/lily+bloom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zzEnAeSKy3w/T22lErOIk9I/AAAAAAAAAzw/1YLYWp9L93Y/s1600/lily+bloom.jpg" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">New weave experiment: </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I bought this beautiful <a href="http://www.avril-kyoto.com/E_itomihon/itomihon809.html" target="_blank">yarn</a> from <a href="http://www.avril-kyoto.com/" target="_blank">Avril</a> when I was last in Japan. I originally bought it for my mother but she was not keen on the colour. So I kept it for myself and had been waiting for the right project /idea to come along.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The skeins have a very defined band of colour and I wanted to see if I could weave or knit it with the colour band expressed. I experimented on the knitting machine but the tension was hard to control. I did not want to start with the original yarn on the loom straight off as it is a lot harder to un-weave than to frog knitting!</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BOPlN7CMRYg/T22m12UMqTI/AAAAAAAAA0Q/8c6Ocldk4WA/s1600/A-frisbiee-tegasuri-gray.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BOPlN7CMRYg/T22m12UMqTI/AAAAAAAAA0Q/8c6Ocldk4WA/s320/A-frisbiee-tegasuri-gray.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Frisbiee Tegasuri (32B gray)</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I dyed some cotton with the same concept, calculated the width of the warp required, and started weaving. It seemed to go according to plan and I was quite happy with the results.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LvTuxjzwRvc/T22lCXf3ioI/AAAAAAAAAzg/9ghrNvoQKYU/s1600/ikat+weft+start.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LvTuxjzwRvc/T22lCXf3ioI/AAAAAAAAAzg/9ghrNvoQKYU/s1600/ikat+weft+start.jpg" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That is until here:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v1w6JCJezOw/T22lDOp8u5I/AAAAAAAAAzo/CnC8ov9gkys/s1600/ikat+weft.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v1w6JCJezOw/T22lDOp8u5I/AAAAAAAAAzo/CnC8ov9gkys/s1600/ikat+weft.jpg" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">and I understand why! As I wind the weft on the skein winder, the circumference of the skein increases as it then becomes wider than the warp. The ikat effect then changes as the colour sections shifts slightly off course for each pick, forming the criss-cross effect. I know all of these theories in my head but sometimes, I just have to do it to believe it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So maybe when I finally use the yarn from Avril, it does not matter how the pattern emerges. I think I will still like it.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">New weave project:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is a glimpse of some weaving for an exhibition submission. I have not really done a lot of 'arty' weaving before, usually they are scarves or wraps. So it is a totally new experience....... </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I started my first top down, seamless <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/summer-solstice-2" target="_blank">cardigan</a> last week and have learnt a new knitting technique, the magic loop. Thanks to <a href="http://soozs.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Sooz</a> and <a href="http://woollenflower.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Woollenflower</a> for starting me off on the right track, helping me with working out the right size and how to keep track of the instructions. It made me feel more confident with knitting a garment. Again, I have normally stuck to knitting accessories with minimal shaping......</span><br />
